All roads lead to Parkfield. At least, this is true starting tomorrow. The weather is supposed to be grand, and so will the 10th Annual Parkfield Bluegrass Festival, produced by the Bluegrass Music Society of the Central Coast. See The James King Band, Rambler’s Choice, Chris Hillman-Herb Pedersen-Bill Bryson Trio, Eric Uglum & Sons, Leroy McNees Bluegrass Gospel Band, Virtual Strangers, Eric Uglum & Sons, Whiskey Chimp, Southside, Wild River Ramblers, Better Late Than Never, Baloney Creek, Bean Creek and Mossy Creek. The event begins at 2:30 p.m. on the 8th and runs until 6 p.m. on Sunday. New jam in Merced -- There is a new bluegrass jam in Merced on the first Wednesday of every month, and the inaugural one is tonight starting at 7 p.m. at the Me-N-Ed's Pizzeria on G Street and Yosemite Avenue. The Merced Bluegrass Society will present this jam. For more info email mercedbluegrass@sbcglobal.net. Bluegrass in Moss Landing -- On the 7th at Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing from 6-8 p.m. you can experience live bluegrass with an all-star band filling in for Deep Elem, who normally plays on the first Wednesday of the month. See/hear Chris Smith (of the Mighty Crows) on guitar, John Kael (of the Deep Elem) on banjo, Bill Ruskin (the Grass Fire Chiefs) on mandolin, Luke Abbott (of The Abbott Family) on fiddle, and Mott Jordan on bass. Smith and Evans in Berkeley -- Tonight at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley Steve Steve will be performing some original and traditional acoustic music on mandolin, mandola, guitar and vocals that blend his eastern Appalachian roots and his adopted southwest home New Mexico. He will be sharing the stage with his longtime musical friend and Bay Area banjoist extraordinaire Bill Evans. Jammin’ in SF -- Tonight is the night for the first Wednesday of the month bluegrass/country jam hosted by Jeanie & Chuck Poling at the Plough & Stars in SF, starting at 8:30 p.m. There is no cover but you must be 21 to attend. South Bay bluegrass barbeque -- Sidesaddle & Company will be pickin’ some hot bluegrass to go along with the spicy barbeque tonight at Sam’s Bar-B-Que in San Jose from 6-9 p.m. Reserve a table at (408) 297-9151. Brothers in Berkeley -- On the 7th go see The Whiskey Brothers play at the Albatross Pub in Berkeley starting at 9 p.m. They play classic Western swing, bluegrass and original music, featuring great vocal harmonies. The band includes local music-scene veterans Jeff Ward on mandolin, Dave Courchaine, guitar, John MacFarlane on fiddle, Bruce Campbell on bass, and Craig Fletcher on banjo. No cover. Jammin’ in Morgan Hill -- Down Morgan Hill way on the first, third and fifth Wednesdays folks congregate to jam at the El Toro Brewing Company from 6-10 p.m. They also meet there on the second and fourth Thursdays. Bluegrass in Auburn -- There is good food and hot bluegrass being served tonight at Latitudes in Auburn from 7:30-9 p.m. with Mountain Laurel providing the picking. No cover. Old-time meets bluegrass in Larkspur -- On the 8th at 8 p.m. the next edition of the Bluegrass Gold series will take place at Sweetwater Station in Larkspur with the Marin County old-time band The Roadoilers and SF bluegrass band The Barefoot Nellies. The Roadoilers are an old-time string band that plays square dance and contra dance music, traditional country singing, ragtime, and Irish traditional tunes. John Pedersen, Perry Fly, Chuck Wiley and Mike Drayton have played together in various combinations for over 25 years. The Bay Area's finest all-gal bluegrass band, The Barefoot Nellies, blend driving, high lonesome vocals, soaring sister duo and trio harmonies, and tasteful picking inspired by traditional bluegrass musicians. This will be a North Bay CD release of their new recording titled Let Me Down Easy. The members are Jess Beebe on bass, Nicole Solis on mandolin, Erika Walther on guitar, Prentiss Sellers on banjo, and Betsy Maudlin on fiddle. For more information call the club at (415) 924-6107. Old-time in San Francisco -- The Atlas Cafe in San Francisco presents the best in live bluegrass and old-time music every Thursday night from 8-10 p.m. Tomorrow you can see Erik Pearson & the Jordanauts playing the latter. No cover charge. Jammin’ in Ventura -- There is a bluegrass jam on the second and fourth Thursdays at Zoey's Café, 451 E. Main Street, in Ventura from 6-9:30 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Bluegrassin’ in September -- L&S Promotions has booked another powerful line-up for the Bluegrassin’ in the Foothills Festival in Plymouth on September 19th-21st. Make plans now to see Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, The Gibson Brothers, The Bluegrass Brothers, New Found Road, Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain, Don Rigsby & Midnight Call, Sawmill Road, Rita Hosking & Cousin Jack, and The Anderson Family Bluegrass Band. The Emerging Artists will be Natural Drift, Nell Robinson & Red Level, The Damage Done and The Four Fingered String Band along with the late night dance band Rick Barnes & Silvermoon. B. Festival Shopping Today's column from Josh Micheals Thursday, May 8, 2008 Rick told me he had a welcome column set up for today, but I didn't see one so I thought I'd put something up so you didn't think we'd forgotten about you. Lots of people are at the Parkfield festival this week. If you haven't been there, you really should consider it. It is a beautiful venue. I have no idea how they found it. It's not exactly on the main thoroughfare. Not only does it have amazing history, but it's right on the San Andreas fault (meaning there is always that extra chance of excitement). The two of us were down in Ventura on Tuesday and Wednesday for work reasons. After our meeting, I dropped Rick off at the festival. Just before that, I got to see the shopping that goes into prepping for the festival. 2 (no more than 3) Fuji apples Several jalapenos 1 brick of good cheese 1 bag of unsalted pretzels 1 six pack of bottled water a nice brown ale and some decent wine ...I think that was it... wait... 1 National Enquirer Now it may seem there isn't enough there to live off of for a weekend, but there is a cafe in Parkfield that serves the best hamburgers I've had in years.
